Using the RIO-8-LL relay board with a PC Parallel Port

The logic level version of the Industrologic RIO-8 (RIO-8-LL) can be connected to a printer (parallel) port of an IBM PC compatible computer, which can be programmed to turn the relays on and off.

The diagram below shows how to connect relays 1-8 to output bits 0-7 of the port. Since the relays on the RIO-8 operate from 12 volts, it is necessary to use an separate 12 volt power supply, connected as shown. Do not attempt to power the RIO-8 from the parallel port.

Many tutorials are available on the web that provide programming information for the PC parallel port, one of which is Use of a PC Printer Port for Control and Data Acquisition, by Peter H. Anderson, Department of Electrical Engineering, Morgan State University.
